"Fixing Veterans Health Care"

While we pay respect and gratitude to our nation's veterans we are also reminded that many veterans are not receiving the timely and quality health care that they deserve. "Concerned Veterans for America" is an organization that is attacking this issue by convening the "Fixing Veterans Health Care" policy taskforce this fall.

The mission of this organization is to diagnose existing challenges faced by veterans in terms of health care, identify systemic solutions and propose concrete reforms to improve health care delivery for them. This taskforce is currently soliciting ideas on how to reform and improve health care for veterans and they will issue a final report in December of 2014, host a policy summit in January of 2015, and propose legislation next year.

In August of this year, President Obama signed the Veterans Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act of 2014 (the "Act"), which was passed by Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support. The main focus of the Act is to ensure that veterans have access to the care they need as well as expand survivor benefits, educational opportunities and improve care for veterans struggling with traumatic brain injuries and victims of sexual assault.

The key provisions of the Affordable Care Act ("ACA") create a commitment to veterans by expanding access to health care and improving medical care services for veterans in rural areas. The ACA also expands consumer protections, improves access to quality, affordable health insurance choices through health insurance Exchanges, and offers access for veterans to premium tax credits and cost sharing reductions.

Today, we celebrate the service, sacrifice and achievements of almost 22 million living Americans who proudly served our nation in uniform - at home and abroad. Now, during times of both war and peace, we must remember that the proposed reforms to health care for our nation's veterans cannot be the end of the effort. Our veterans made the homeland safe and they deserve a health care system that addresses their needs now and in the future.
